Paper only · not adviceMarked Sep 18, 2026, 12:58 PT

I sell software companies for a living, which means I spend my days on what a buyer would actually pay for a business and almost none of them on public stocks. This is the public-stock side of that, built as code so it runs whether I look at it or not, and put on a page so the score is public too.

Five paper portfolios started on the same day with the same $100,000. One of them, the control arm, owns whatever the screens surface and applies no opinion at all. The other four get the exact same candidate list and are run by AI managers, each with a written lens, a rule set and a list of its own biases, and each one decides what to own from there. Every book is marked against the S&P 500 bought with the same dollars on the same day, so the index is the thing to beat and the null hypothesis is that none of this was worth doing.

Nothing here is a real position. No orders are placed, no broker is connected, and none of it is investment advice. The point of the page is the number next to each book, not the stories underneath it. If a book cannot beat the index, the index wins, and that gets written down here the same as a win would.

Every book is marked in the same price fetch, so the comparison is not an artifact of timing. Indexed to 100 at inception. Marks are Yahoo Finance closes, refreshed through the trading day. A paper book is a portfolio kept on paper. The share counts are a bookkeeping quantity, no money moves, and no broker is ever called.

The five books

The control arm is the machine on its own. The four managers are AI, each handed the same pitch book every Tuesday with a written philosophy, a rule set the code enforces on the returned decisions, and a list of its own biases that it wrote down before it picked a single name. One of the four is my own lens, written down the same way and run the same way, which is the only fair way to find out whether the lens is worth anything.

Encode the mechanisms the evidence supports and let them run. Every name in this book is here because it passed arithmetic — a forced-selling window, a price dislocation that has not closed, an R&D backlog in the sector's top decile, a monopoly still making new highs. No model is consulted before a name is chosen. The only thing a language model does in this pipeline is write the explanation afterwards.

What it weighs

  • Structural forced selling (index deletions, spinoffs)
  • Entry price relative to the pre-event level
  • Gross profits over assets as the quality floor
  • Its own valuation history, never a sector average

Its own biases, in its own words

  • Owns whatever the screens surface, including clusters it would be uncomfortable holding if it were capable of discomfort.
  • Cannot see a portfolio-level risk that no single screen measures — two names exposed to the same customer, the same currency, the same war.
  • Blind to anything that has not yet reached a filing. A screen is always looking backwards at published data.

Rules the code enforces

Mechanism weights, 10% max per name, 30% per mechanism, 3-year minimum hold.

Sizing guardrails the code enforces on the control arm: no single name above 10% of the book, no mechanism above 30%, a 10% cash floor, and a three-year minimum hold that only a veto, the incremental return-on-capital tripwire or a monopoly trim can override.

Sells software and services to law enforcement and investigators for extracting, analyzing, decrypting, and managing digital evidence from devices across criminal investigation types globally.

Cellebrite dropped 34.3% in five days around August 17 after cutting its full-year guidance and announcing that Shiven Ramji would replace the outgoing CEO — a simultaneous reset of financial expectations and leadership that the market treated as a fundamental break. The Q2 earnings call attributed the pressure to elongated sales cycles and lower pricing gains from product migrations: timing and execution problems, not a loss of the underlying business, which operates across legally sanctioned investigations in child exploitation, homicide, anti-terror, border control, and financial crime — workflows where switching costs are high and customer relationships are embedded in law enforcement infrastructure. The 84% gross margin survived the guidance cut, which is the clearest test of whether earnings power is intact or merely delayed; the position is sized for the recovery as the new CEO resets the sales pipeline and the forced and frightened selling that drove the overshoot fades.

The bet is that IBM's 30.1% five-day drop around July 15, 2026 overshot the real damage to a business built on long-cycle enterprise relationships — falls of that speed tend to recover as forced and frightened selling fades. IBM operates through Software, Consulting, Infrastructure, and Financing segments, carrying a 58% gross margin and an 18% operating margin across clients managing hybrid cloud and AI deployments; no provided headline explains what triggered the move, meaning no source shows the business itself is impaired. The position targets a 26.2% recovery to $299.90; the evidence that would prove the damage real is a disclosure of lost contracts, client attrition, or guidance cuts.

Vicor designs and makes modular power conversion components — brick-format DC-DC converters and complementary components — for defense, aerospace, satellite, factory automation, telecom, and vehicle customers, markets where qualification cycles are long and switching costs are high, and the position exists because a 30.7% five-day drop around July 8, 2026 is the kind of move that typically overshoots the real damage as forced and frightened sellers exit regardless of fundamentals. No provided headline explains the move, which means nothing in the available record shows the business is impaired. A 57% gross margin and 18% operating margin describe an entrenched supplier rather than a commodity one, and the position targets a 106.5% recovery to $379.78; what would prove the damage real is a customer loss, a product qualification failure, or a guidance cut in a subsequent earnings report.

Offers installment loans via the OppLoans platform to US consumers turned away by mainstream lenders, operating through bank partnerships as a digital finance platform.

OppFi dropped roughly 25% on August 11 after Q2 earnings and revenues missed estimates — Zacks confirmed the miss and Motley Fool called the report 'displeasing' — and the stock continued falling over the five-day window to a 32.8% total decline. Simply Wall St. noted analysts were reassessing guidance and credit risk, which frames the concern as whether the miss reflects a one-time shortfall or the start of sustained deterioration in loan quality on the OppLoans platform; the provided sources do not say which, and that ambiguity is the honest starting point for the bet. OppFi carries an 83% gross margin and a 64% operating margin, which means the underlying unit economics remained intact even after the miss; the position targets a 39.4% recovery and will be re-evaluated as credit quality data either validates the overreaction thesis or confirms that the miss marked a genuine deterioration in credit risk.

No provided source explains what triggered the move, which means nothing in the available record shows the business itself is impaired; the absence of any identified catalyst suggests the selling pressure was not specific to the platform. The position targets a 33.5% recovery to $19.34; what would prove the damage real is a disclosure of lost agency clients, advertiser budget cuts, or a structural shift in how programmatic buying is conducted.

Provides vehicle lifecycle data, analytics, and forecasting under brands including CARFAX, Polk Automotive Solutions, and Market Scan to automakers, dealers, and financial institutions.

Mobility Global began NYSE trading on June 26, 2026, spun out of S&P Global — confirmed by the July 4 Simply Wall St. article and by the filed business summary, which states the company was formerly known as S&P Global Mobility Holding Company. The SEC Form 10-12B filed May 7, 2026 by registrant 'Mobility Global Inc.' is the formal separation record. The standalone business operates CARFAX, automotiveMastermind, Polk Automotive Solutions, and Market Scan, providing data, analytics, insights, and technology across the full vehicle lifecycle to automakers, suppliers, dealer groups, media, financial institutions, and consumers. S&P Global shareholders who received MBGL shares owned a diversified financial data company, not an automotive data specialist, and many are selling without reference to what Mobility Global earns or is worth on its own terms; the July 4 article flags that shares are highly illiquid, meaning bid-ask spreads are wide and the selling pressure can overshoot further before it exhausts itself. The position buys that indiscriminate supply, now 59 days post-distribution, and profits when a buyer base that values a standalone vehicle-data platform sets the price.

The franchise has been confirming itself: Zacks reports strong product demand and pipeline progress driving a 23% year-to-date gain, Investor's Business Daily notes institutional buyers accumulating shares, and a six-month return of 29% has outpaced the S&P 500 by 15.7 percentage points. Designs data center accelerated computing chips and gaming GPUs; self-described as a data center-scale AI infrastructure company serving cloud providers, OEMs, and automotive manufacturers.

NVIDIA's data center accelerated computing platform — the Compute & Networking segment that sells GPUs and networking for training and running AI models — is generating 132% revenue growth and a 71% gross margin, confirming that the platform commands prices customers pay without accessible alternatives at scale. The only provided source touching NVIDIA is a September 16 discussion of AI regulation in which the Autodesk CEO and others call for accountability for frontier AI products — a policy debate, not evidence of competitive displacement of the GPU architecture that generates the revenue. The position holds because a franchise growing at 132% with 71% gross margins and an incremental ROIC of 88% tends to keep being re-rated upward as each result confirms the prior period was not a peak; what would end it is evidence that a competing accelerator architecture is displacing NVIDIA's GPUs at scale inside the cloud service providers and enterprise data centers where the Compute & Networking revenue is generated.

At 86% of its 52-week high with one-year momentum of 30%, the position rides the re-rating as long as results confirm the franchise; what would end it is a deterioration in Wizards of the Coast trading card revenue or a breakdown in licensing deal activity, neither of which the current sources show.

Frontdoor's American Home Shield home warranty — a subscription covering repair or replacement of HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing, water heaters, and major appliances under one annual fee — is the kind of franchise that is difficult to replicate: the company has been in operation since 1971, and homeowners who enroll tend to renew because the alternative is managing individual repair vendors on their own. The 55% gross margin and 29.5% incremental return on invested capital confirm that pricing more than covers claims costs, and the 16% revenue growth shows the subscriber base is expanding rather than maturing. The profit surge flagged in Insider Monkey's Q2 headline is the confirming signal the position is riding; what would end it is a sustained mismatch between what Frontdoor charges and what it pays out in claims costs — a scenario the current margin profile does not yet show.

Shareholders of Honeywell who received this stock on June 15, 2026 — now 70 days ago — own a standalone aerospace components and systems manufacturer: actuation products, auxiliary power units, cockpit displays, navigation systems, satellite communications, wheel and braking systems, and the GoDirect Trade e-commerce platform for new and used aircraft parts, serving commercial airlines, military, business aviation, and space customers. Most of those shareholders chose to own a diversified industrial conglomerate, not a focused aerospace hardware and avionics business, and many are selling without regard to what the standalone company is worth. Honda has spent R&D equal to 54% of its current market cap over four years — the highest ratio among 134 industrial companies in the screen — and the income statement has been treating all of it as expense, which means the balance sheet says nothing about what that spending built. The sources point to areas where Honda is now active: Zacks noted that 'hybrid cars are gaining ground as EV challenges mount,' with Honda in focus, and Honda made a direct investment in Niron Magnetics, the Minnesota-based maker of rare-earth-free magnets that broke ground on a manufacturing plant in September 2026. Honda is simultaneously squeezing suppliers to compete on cost against cheaper Chinese rivals. The appointment of Ingrid Zhang — previously chief commercial officer of Novartis International — as CEO brings a commercialization background to a company whose scientific work the accounts have been treating as pure expense, and that appointment has already sparked buyout speculation. The August 2026 move to acquire ST-920, a Fabry disease gene therapy, through a $111 million bankruptcy auction extends that pipeline into a new rare disease using what MarketBeat described as PTC's 'existing global commercial and regulatory infrastructure' — meaning the spending bought not just drug candidates but the operational capability to commercialize them. Ralph Lauren's 70% gross margin on 18% revenue growth, with incremental return on invested capital of 84.4% over three years, describes a multi-brand franchise — Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lauren Ralph Lauren, and the associated accessories, home goods, and fragrance lines — that is expanding its economics, not just maintaining them, across North America, Europe, and Asia. The mechanism is straightforward: a franchise that keeps delivering results at this margin level tends to attract a progressively higher valuation until the results stop confirming, and the stock's 244.9% one-year return alongside 32% twelve-minus-one momentum reflects a re-rating that is actively in progress rather than anticipated. The most recent confirmations from the provided sources are a dividend increase and the company clearing its 2030 climate goal, both of which signal that management is executing with enough financial headroom to return capital and invest simultaneously. But the income statement has been absorbing R&D equal to 38.6% of market cap for four years, and that spending also funded Navenibart — a monoclonal antibody plasma kallikrein inhibitor for HAE currently in Phase 3 — plus Avoralstat for diabetic macular edema in Phase 1, BCX17725 for Netherton syndrome in Phase 1, and STAR-0310 for atopic dermatitis in Phase 1, none of which share the HAE competitive headwind and none of which appears on the balance sheet. MarketBeat published a piece questioning whether Guidewire's post-earnings plunge would last, RBC Capital Markets said on September 16 that Guidewire's cloud migration and AI strategy support durable growth, and by September 15 the shares were described as soaring — all consistent with the read that the sell-off overshot whatever the original disappointment was. The bet is positioned for recovery toward $27.01 as the selling pressure clears; what would end it is evidence — currently absent from every provided source — that the fall was caused by something structural in the IVD product line rather than external flow.

Designs RF and analog semiconductors for defense and aerospace, connectivity and IoT, and cellular smartphone markets, selling directly to device manufacturers and through distributors globally.

Qorvo has spent the equivalent of 26.5% of its market cap every year for four years on research and development, all of it expensed immediately under accounting rules, none of it sitting on the balance sheet as an asset — and what those dollars built is three distinct technology platforms: radio frequency, analog mixed-signal, and power management solutions for defense and aerospace in the HPA segment, a connectivity and sensor portfolio spanning UWB, Matter, Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, and cellular for smart home, automotive, and industrial markets in the CSG segment, and cellular solutions for smartphones, wearables, laptops, and tablets in the ACG segment. A September 16 DCF analysis by Simply Wall St. flags that the stock at $118.06 — up 36.8% year to date — trades well above what modeled free cash flows of approximately $643 million over the latest twelve months would justify, with the premium partly explained by progress toward a merger with Skyworks Solutions, including extension of senior note exchange offers through September 2026. That merger, if completed, would combine two companies' expensed R&D portfolios, potentially surfacing value that neither balance sheet has ever recorded. The bet is that HPA, CSG, and ACG represent real intellectual and manufacturing assets the accounts do not show, and that those platforms convert into earnings the market has not priced — though the 36.8% year-to-date rally means that thesis needs to prove itself faster than it would have at a lower starting price.

Sells enterprise AI application software and a development platform to large organizations; formerly branded C3 IoT, the company pivoted to AI software in 2019.

The market has spent years marking C3.ai down for losses that accounting rules require: research spending is expensed immediately as incurred, leaving nothing on the balance sheet to show what those dollars built — and at 27.1% of market cap per year for four years, the unbooked asset is substantial. What those dollars bought is a working suite of enterprise AI products: the C3 Agentic AI Platform for designing and deploying AI applications, C3 AI Studio for engineers and data scientists, industry-specific C3 AI Applications, C3 Generative AI for automating data retrieval and workflows, and C3 Code, which auto-generates complete production-grade applications from a single environment — all distributed through existing partnerships with Microsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, McKinsey, and Baker Hughes that extend reach without additional capital. None of that is recorded as an asset on the balance sheet, which is exactly why the $2 billion market cap may be measuring the losses rather than what they funded. The bet is that the products generate revenue the income statement will begin to reflect, and that a market pricing a five-year 76% decline has not yet distinguished between a company that burned cash and a company that built something with it.

Developed the BNT162 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine and is building a pipeline of oncology immunotherapies across multiple cancer types in Phase II and III trials.

BioNTech has spent the equivalent of 35% of its market cap per year for four years on research that accounting rules require to be expensed entirely — meaning a late-stage oncology pipeline sits at zero on the balance sheet, while the income statement shows only the cost. The most concrete proof that the spending is converting into real science is gotistobart: in the Phase 3 PRESERVE-003 trial in metastatic squamous non-small cell lung cancer, it nearly doubled median overall survival versus standard chemotherapy, with a 12-month progression-free survival rate of 25.2% against 0% for docetaxel and a median overall survival not yet reached in the drug arm versus 9.95 months for chemotherapy — results that build on Stage 1 data showing a 54% reduction in the risk of death, and that position gotistobart as a potential chemotherapy-free treatment in a population with significant unmet need. That is one drug in a pipeline BioNTech describes as 14 ongoing pivotal trials and more than 10 novel combination programs, with assets including pumitamig, Trastuzumab pamirtecan, BNT113, and BNT116 advancing across lung, breast, ovarian, colorectal, and other cancers, and 17 or more late-stage or pivotal readouts identified through 2030 and beyond. The stock trades around a 22% discount to analyst targets, with the most-followed fair value estimate at $120.62, and is down 7.7% over the past year; the bet is that the market is still pricing a fading COVID-vaccine franchise while the R&D has already built a multi-product oncology engine that the accounts — which record only the cost, never the asset — do not reflect.

Operates an online automotive marketplace where dealers and OEMs list inventory, and sells add-on tools including trade-in appraisals (AccuTrade), dealer websites, and targeted social and search media products.

Cars.com has expensed the equivalent of 32.5% of its market cap per year for four years on technology development, with nothing capitalized — but the outputs are concrete: AccuTrade, which uses demand data and diagnostic scans to produce a VIN-specific trade-in offer in minutes; VIN Performance Media, a machine-learning system for placing real-time inventory ads across search, social, and display; and Dealer Verified Listings, launched in Q2 2026, which adds inspection details and pricing context directly to vehicle pages for shoppers. Q2 2026 offered the first visible sign those tools are translating into pricing power: net income doubled to $14.3 million on revenue growth of just 1%, Marketplace revenue grew more than 7% — its fastest pace since 2021 — and adjusted EBITDA margin came in at 29.4%, above management's own guidance ceiling, even as the company retired more than 10% of shares outstanding in the first half of the year by repurchasing 6.2 million shares for $57 million. The market appears to be pricing a business with flat revenue growth and $450 million in debt, which accurately describes the income statement, but not what the income statement omits: a set of proprietary data tools and machine-learning infrastructure built at the company's expense, expensed rather than capitalized, that are now generating margin without proportional revenue growth. The bet is that those unbooked assets drive further margin expansion the accounts have never shown, and that the current $1 billion market cap reflects the revenue ceiling but not the profit floor.

Start at ten equal weights and make the book earn every change from there. The job is not to find the best stock, it is to own a set of positions whose risks are genuinely different from one another. Before anything else, ask what this book is actually exposed to: not what sector a name is labelled, but what has to go wrong for several positions to fall together. Two buy-now-pay-later lenders are one bet on the consumer wearing two tickers. Six biotechs are one bet on the funding cycle. And a position with no clear reason it should stop being cheap is not an investment, it is an inventory item — if there is no catalyst and no sell-off worth exploiting, the honest answer is to not own it.

What it weighs

  • Correlated exposure across names, not sector labels
  • A dated, nameable catalyst for each position
  • Whether the macro backdrop is being paid for or ignored
  • Position count discipline — ten is a decision, not a default

Its own biases, in its own words

  • Diversifies away edge. Concentration is where returns come from, and this lens is structurally uncomfortable with it.
  • Over-weights the macro story of the moment. A war or a confidence print is vivid, usually already priced, and rarely decides a three-year hold.
  • Sells too early. 'No clear catalyst' is a fair reason to decline a purchase and a poor reason to abandon a compounding position.

Most mispricing is not a disagreement about numbers, it is a CATEGORY ERROR. The market prices a company by the label it wears — this is a retailer, this is a biotech, this is a chip company — and the label determines the multiple long before anyone examines the cash flows. The opportunity is a business whose economics have quietly stopped matching its category. The mismatch is different every time — what a company actually sells, who actually pays, what the customer cannot easily stop doing — and naming it correctly for THIS business is the work. Reach for the comparison the facts in front of you suggest, not the one that worked last week; an analogy you could apply to any name is not an insight, it is a habit. Ask what would have to be TRUE for today's price to be correct, then ask whether anyone actually believes that. Reason across industries — the useful analogy is almost never from the same sector, because the same sector is where everyone is already looking.

What it weighs

  • Businesses whose economics no longer match their label
  • What must be true for the current price to be right
  • Cross-industry analogies over sector comparables
  • Second-order effects — who else gets paid if this works

Its own biases, in its own words

  • Falls in love with the elegant argument. A beautiful thesis feels like an edge and often is not — the market is frequently right and boring.
  • Runs concentrated, so a single category error of its own does real damage.
  • Early, sometimes by years. A misclassification can persist far longer than the patience of the person who spotted it.
  • Prone to finding pattern in noise, because that is the same faculty that finds the genuine mispricing.

Trained deep value at a long-only value shop — Graham and Dodd, buy the statistically cheap thing the market has decided to hate, and hold it long enough to be right. Then industrial private equity at an industrial private equity firm, where you underwrite a business by taking it apart: the capital structure, the maintenance capex, what actually happens to margins in a downturn. Now sell-side software M&A, which is the part that matters most here — spending your days running processes teaches you what a strategic acquirer genuinely pays for recurring revenue, what retention and gross margin do to a multiple, and how far public quotes can drift from private-market value in both directions. So the question is never what the chart says. It is what this whole company would fetch in a process, conservatively underwritten, and whether the public market is offering it at a discount to that. A CFA's discipline about the numbers, a control investor's suspicion of adjusted EBITDA, and a banker's sense of who the buyer would be. If there is no plausible buyer and no discount, there is no trade.

What it weighs

  • Private-market value — what a strategic or sponsor would pay for the whole thing
  • Quality of revenue: recurring, retained, and what it costs to keep
  • Balance sheet and maintenance capex, not adjusted EBITDA
  • Discount to a conservative estimate of value, as the margin of safety
  • Software and industrials, where the underwriting instinct is genuinely earned

Its own biases, in its own words

  • Deep-value training anchors hard on cheapness. That school spent most of the 2010s being right about price and wrong about outcome, and the reflex to buy the statistically cheap thing has not gone away.
  • Over-trusts its read on software, because that is the daily job. A private multiple seen in a live process is not a multiple the public market has to pay — and it may not pay it for years, or ever.
  • Carries a control investor's instincts into minority positions. In a PE deal you can fix the capital structure or change management; here you can only watch, and the framework quietly assumes influence it does not have.
  • Sell-side exposure is a survivorship funnel. The businesses that reach a process are the ones somebody wanted to buy, which makes deals feel more achievable than the base rate supports.
  • Reaches for the software and industrials playbook everywhere, because that is where the pattern-matching was earned. A consumer or healthcare business gets underwritten as though recurring revenue and maintenance capex were the whole story, which is a distortion rather than a gap — the view is still formed, it is just formed through the wrong template.

Manufactures aircraft avionics, engines, auxiliary power units, braking systems, and other aerospace components for commercial, military, and business aviation; formerly a Honeywell International subsidiary.

Zero leverage in a hiking cycle — the Fed just raised 25bp and projects another, and this balance sheet carries no debt against it. Aftermarket aerospace is the clearest recurring-revenue analogue in industrials: once an engine is installed, the parts annuity runs for decades. Since-listing loss improved from -20.9% to -17.9%, meaning the indiscriminate selling from Honeywell shareholders is fading. Castings constraint is industry-wide with relief expected 2027 — that is a supply problem, not a demand problem, and supply problems resolve. The $45M/quarter intangible amortization overstates the true cash cost of running the business. I hold and wait.

Sells drugs for blood cancers and graft-versus-host disease; JAKAFI, a JAK inhibitor for myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera, is the primary commercial product.

Best-executing position in the book. 93% gross margin specialty pharma with Jakafi confirmed by CMS settlement and Opzelura expanded approval. 12-1 momentum at +47% gives 30pp cushion above the median. Q2 +37% revenue growth is inflated by the $246M CMS settlement — but Q3 on Oct 27 is the clean quarter, and if ex-settlement growth comes in at +15-17%, the franchise pricing power is confirmed independently. Patent cliff is Dec 2028 / generic Mar 2029 — 27+ months away, not imminent. Four ANDA filers (Apotex, Hikma, Sun, Granules) are all in infringement litigation. This is a franchise earning monopoly returns with a long runway.

Provides vehicle lifecycle data, analytics, and forecasting under brands including CARFAX, Polk Automotive Solutions, and Market Scan to automakers, dealers, and financial institutions.

CARFAX is a monopoly on used-car history data — every dealer transaction, every consumer purchase touches it. True leverage is 2.4x (the pipeline's 0.3x is confirmed wrong for a 9th run), but all fixed-rate. Since-listing worsened from -3.7% to -4.7%, meaning the S&P Global shareholder selling has not yet exhausted, but at 82 days post-distribution the window is narrowing. FY guide cut to $1.87-1.885B is a concern I watch but not a structural impairment of the data monopoly itself. The analyst bear case on the pipeline data error is a process failure, not a business failure. I hold.

Designs data center accelerated computing chips and gaming GPUs; self-described as a data center-scale AI infrastructure company serving cloud providers, OEMs, and automotive manufacturers.

I am fighting my own deep-value bias here and flagging it. NVDA is not cheap on any traditional metric — but the figures are extraordinary: 132% revenue growth, 71% gross margin, 88% incremental ROIC. No hyperscaler has formally cut capex despite the AI slowdown narrative (analyst confirmed: Meta maintained $130-145B, MSFT and GOOG have not revised, Oracle guided ~$70B). The hold rule says HOLD with 11.9pp momentum cushion above the median. The valuation band passed. At 91% of 52-week high there is 6pp cushion before the automatic trim. The competitive moat — nobody is building an alternative GPU architecture at this scale — is the private-market value anchor. My discomfort with the price is precisely the deep-value reflex that spent most of the 2010s being right about price and wrong about outcome.

The 30.1% drop on the Z mainframe -42% quarter is a cyclical event in a lumpy product line, not a structural break. 58% gross margin and 18.5% operating margin survived the quarter — the falsifier (OM below 14%) is intact at 18.5%. Software and consulting generate the recurring revenue; Z is infrastructure hardware with well-documented multi-year refresh cycles. Off-low at +16.3% means the recovery is underway. The dual-architecture Z+Arm chip will take quarters to generate revenue, but that is a pipeline refill, not a permanent loss. Recovery target +26.2% is modest and achievable if Q3 earnings on Oct 21 confirm the operating margin holds.

Sells annual home warranty plans covering repair or replacement of home systems and appliances under the American Home Shield and other brands in the US.

American Home Shield is a 55-year-old home warranty franchise with annual subscription revenue, high retention, and a 55% gross margin — this is the recurring-revenue analogue I look for in consumer services. Membership grew for the first time in five years, which is a genuine inflection. The analyst bear case notes revenue growth is partly price-driven (~3pp) — but the combination of pricing power AND unit growth is exactly what a private-equity buyer pays a premium for: it shows the franchise can grow both the base and the price simultaneously. At 89% of 52-week high, the valuation band passed, and the hold rule says HOLD with a 10.8pp momentum cushion. Incremental ROIC at 29.5% confirms improving unit economics. Previously blocked by the valuation band when P/E was 1.38x its own median at 91% of high — the price correction opened the entry.

The lens

Returns are decided on the supply side, not the demand side. Almost everyone forecasts demand, which is hard and widely attempted; far fewer watch capacity, which is observable and mostly ignored. When capital floods an industry — capex rising, entrants arriving, everyone expanding into an obvious opportunity — future returns are being competed away no matter how good the demand story is. When capital flees — capex cut, capacity closing, consolidation, an industry nobody wants to fund — the survivors inherit pricing power. So the question is never 'is this a good business today', it is 'which way is capital moving, and who is left standing at the other end'. This is a slow lens. It is usually early and it is usually uncomfortable, because the moment capital flees is the moment the news is worst.

What it weighs

  • Direction of capital: capex, entrants, consolidation
  • Supply discipline over demand forecasts
  • Surviving operators in starved industries
  • Long horizon — the cycle turns in years, not quarters

Its own biases, in its own words

  • Systematically early, and comfortable with that, which means real drawdowns before the thesis pays.
  • Structurally suspicious of whatever is currently exciting — will underweight genuine secular winners by mistaking a real boom for a capital cycle.
  • Reads asset-light businesses through a capex lens that barely applies, so capacity gets proxied by headcount, R&D or capital raised — a rougher signal than a factory, and one this lens tends to under-weight rather than admit.
  • Its evidence is often qualitative here: capex and capacity data is thinner in this pitch book than the framework really wants.

Rules the code enforces

8 to 12 names, nothing above 14%. At most 4 changes per rebalance — this lens is meaningless at high turnover, and a change counts a sell as well as a buy, so four is two swaps and not four new ideas.

Cleanest capital cycle in the book, unchanged. Invested capital down 30%, ROIC nearly doubled from 6.8% to 11.3%, revenue flat. Nobody on earth is building new combustible capacity. The survivors inherit pricing power on an unchallenged, shrinking base. The Fed hiking 25bp and projecting another tightens funding conditions for any hypothetical entrant further — this accelerates capital exit from the industry, which is structurally bullish for survivors.

The supply constraint IS the thesis. Castings capacity physically cannot expand — qualification cycles and legacy tooling block new entrants. Zero leverage (net_debt/EBITDA 0.0). Ad-tech consolidation is complete. Capital has left open-internet retargeting — nobody is building new infrastructure to compete. Q2 client-specific revenue headwinds are execution noise on a structural supply picture that is permanently thinned. Invested capital in the craft market down 49%, Cricut survived with virtually no leverage (debt/OCF 0.06). Competitors have exited. The remaining question — cyclical trough or permanent decline in craft machines — is still unanswered, which is why conviction is low. The capital cycle signal (supply destroyed, survivor intact) is textbook; what I cannot determine from this pitch book is whether demand for the category itself has permanently impaired. At 85.3% of 52wk high, the stock has not collapsed in sympathy with the capital exit, which makes me slightly uncomfortable — the price is not reflecting the same distress the supply picture shows.

DA Davidson maintained Buy/$15 post-fireside. Capital cycle thesis (Honda pivoting ¥4.4T into hybrid/ICE while EV entrants burn capital) is intact. Share count down 14.4%. But the tariff situation has worsened materially since last memo: USMCA not renewed for 16-year extension, new US tariffs on ~$20B Canadian exports (incl autos) effective Aug 22, Canadian retaliatory tariffs Sep 8, and Honda itself warned it will not build a new North American plant without a USMCA deal. Cash-to-debt buffer is razor-thin ($32.4B vs $31.5B). Lowest conviction in the book. I am holding because the capital cycle signal (EV capital burning while Honda's hybrid/ICE position strengthens) is real and observable, but the tariff overhang could overwhelm it.

The manager's own reasoning

How the machine works

Every Monday evening the screens run over every listed US company above $2 billion in market value, and the output is a written proposal with the coverage stated at the top, so a partial scan cannot pass as a full one.

Every Tuesday morning the control arm applies the proposal, the four managers get the new pitch book and decide what to own, and the one-paragraph reasons under each holding are rewritten from the screen figures, the filed business summaries and dated headlines. A model writes those paragraphs after the fact, and a second pass strikes any company fact the sources do not support, because generation leaks recalled knowledge no matter what the prompt says.

No model picks a name for the control arm. The four managers are the only place a model decides anything, and the code rejects any decision that breaks the manager’s own mandate rather than quietly accepting it.

Overreaction

A business with wide margins whose stock fell at least 18% inside five sessions at some point in the last 90 days. The screen does not know why it fell, only that the drop was violent and the margins underneath were worth defending, so the name goes on the list with the event window attached and the price before the drop as the recovery target. Held six to eighteen months.

The anti-trap veto

Not a picker, a veto that runs against every candidate from every other screen. Statistically cheap, revenue going backwards and a negative six-month move at the same time gets thrown out, whatever the other screens liked about it. It would have caught most of what went wrong on the list I kept a year earlier, which is why it runs on everything.

R&D backlog

Four years of R&D spending added up and divided by market cap, ranked inside the sector, top decile only, with a balance sheet that can survive. Expensed R&D never shows up as an asset, so the market is often pricing the losses and not what the losses bought. It is bought as an equal-weight basket of five rather than a single name, because in my experience the best name on this screen is where the payoff lives and nobody has the nerve to size it alone.

Monopoly momentum

Large cap, high margin, growing fast and within 15% of its 52-week high, ranked on gross profit over assets. The idea is to stay on the businesses the market has already decided are monopolies for as long as the tape agrees, with a written rule for when it stops agreeing: below 85% of the high, or behind the universe on twelve-month momentum, and the position gets trimmed and reviewed.

Deletion basket

Stocks thrown out of the S&P 500 for a reason other than a takeover or a bankruptcy, bought within 30 days of the removal as long as the business still generates cash. Index selling is forced selling, and the research on what happens to the names that get dumped goes back decades (Research Affiliates runs a whole index on it). Equal weight, small positions, held three to five years. The veto deliberately does not run here, because cheap and hated is the point.

Spinoffs

Companies spun out of a parent, bought between day 20 and day 120 after they start trading, which is roughly when the parent’s shareholders who never asked for the shares have finished selling them. Half-size positions, the veto runs in full, held one to three years.
